International Women’s Day Spotlight

March 8th 2022 is International Women’s Day, an international holiday recognized by the United Nations celebrating women and advocating for a variety of women’s health and social issues. International Women’s Day is a nonprofit organization in and of itself which provides fundraising resources, advocates for social change and tries to create a gender-equal world, free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. On this day, Giveology wanted to share with our community six unique and powerful women focused organizations.

The Malala Fund

Malala Yousafzai is an education activist in Pakistan who has earned global recognition for her work which also made her the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. After rehabilitating from a near death experience at the hands of the Taliban, in 2014 Malala established the Malala fund to give every girl the opportunity to achieve a future she chooses through education.

Their work is unique because instead of building schools with funding, the Malala fund invests in education champions through local advocates and educators to create a powerful network. They are challenging status quos in many countries which have traditionally not been set up for girls to receive a quality education.

Girls Write Nashville

Girls Write Nashville brings together the power of mentorship and music to create a positive community for teen girls. The curriculum is backed by research, is committed to accessibility and inclusivity, is taught by a trauma-informed teaching artist, and is aligned with the standards of creative youth development and culturally responsive education practices.

The GWN Writers Guild, writes records and produces an album of original songs every year which you can listen to here.

Bright Pink

Bright Pink is a Venture Philanthropy fund focused on providing critical financial support to breast and ovarian health initiatives. The mission is to accelerate, deepen and expand the impact of life-saving breast and ovarian health interventions.

They value proactiveness, equity, agency, data, partnership, and positivity in their mission to save lives. Typically, Giveology won’t fund grant giving organizations, but when it comes to promoting and supporting science and research, that is the best strategy.

Exhale to Inhale

Exhale to Inhale (E2H) uses the healing practices of trauma-informed yoga to empower survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, while also helping communities to develop the skills and knowledge to support survivors.

While E2H is not explicitly for women only, the unfortunate fact is that 85% of domestic violence victims are women and 90% of sexual assault survivors are women. E2H is certainly not the only resource and organization out there working on healing this trauma. If you or a loved one is struggling with this, resources are available at the National Sexual Assault Hotline (1-800) 656-4673 at www.rainn.org or at the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

Women Employed

Women Employed is an advocacy focused nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the economic status of women and remove barriers to economic equity. Giveology also typically won’t fund purely advocacy groups, but when it comes to policy change surrounding economic opportunity and prosperity, giving to advocacy groups is the best strategy.

Women Employed’s advocacy priorities include equal pay legislation, guaranteed maternity leave, fair scheduling and making career pathways accessible for everyone. They use their network and connections to lobby, introduce policy changes and to provide resources for professionals in the workforce to advance.

Strong Women Strong Girls

Strong Women Strong Girls combines three generations;  girls, college women and professional women for a mentorship group that empowers girls and women to pursue their dreams while building confidence, leadership skills and supportive relationships.

These groups experience the SWSG curriculum together, as well as go on shared experiences together like campus discovery tours and an annual activity filled in person camp.
